Happy New Comics Wednesday!  It’s a somber week in
comics with the passing of industry legend Stan Lee.
Matt offers some words on Lee’s influence on him and on comics:

“I’m not sure what I can say about Stan Lee’s influence that
hasn’t already been said. It’s hard to imagine the comics
industry resembling anything like what we have today without him.
So perhaps you can be patient for me to wax nostalgic.

In 1973, I was in 5th grade and had started collecting DC
Comics. The stories were largely what we now call
‘done-in-ones,’ and there was little to no continuity.
I had no expectation of anything else.

Two years later, I entered junior high and made a friend of
someone else who also collected comics, but he was mostly
into Marvels. He lived literally a few houses from school
so we would frequently walk to his house and read comics.
It was there I was exposed to Marvel Comics, and they were
more intense than DC Comics. It seemed that every issue had
a reference to an older issue, which was a little intimidating,
knowing there was all this relevant history that I wasn’t
familiar with.

In the spring of 1976, I started receiving checks from
various relatives for my upcoming Bar Mitzvah that summer, and
one day I went down to the local stationary store (there was no
nearby comic book store) and spent $20 on nearly every Marvel
Comic that was on sale. Since comics were only 30 cents then,
this was over 60 comics! I immersed myself in the Marvel
Universe, and even though I was frequently confused and
overwhelmed, I was also intrigued and hooked!  The modern
mythology of the Marvel Universe captivated me.

A few years later I attended a comic book convention in NYC and
briefly met Stan. He was signing autographs (for free, of course)
and let me take a picture of him (see above).
Little did I suspect that I would own a comic book store ten years later!
Also, I just realized that I’m roughly the same age now as Stan was when I took the picture.

I’ll close with one of his most famous quotes, which is all-too
relevant in these chaotic times:

“‘With great power there must also come great responsibility!'”

Our stand-out picks for this week are:
